Report from Costa Rica says a massive ocean earthquake near Salvador triggered the sinking of the Ilopango lagoon islands. Five hundred people died as tidal waves wrecked vessels and wrecked wharves. several inhabited isles disappeared, residents fled to the mainland, and tremors continued. The sunken island, 30 years old since 1880, was of volcanic origin with other islands feared to follow.
