Jefferson Davis ex president of the Confederacy died at his friend J A Payne’s home in New Orleans after a Congestive chill. He showed signs of improvement Thursday but declined Friday and passed away at about 1 am. Born June 3 1803 in Kentucky he later served at West Point Mexican and Indian wars, in Congress and the Senate, was Mississippi governor candidate Foote defeated him, and he was secretary of war under Pierce. He married a daughter of Gen Zack Taylor.
