President McKinley deflects a question on camp mis management and soldier deaths. He promises a full investigation when appropriate and says guilty parties will be punished. The remarks were reported by a Somerset Pennsylvania special to the Commercial Tribune.
Secretary Alger declares no inquiry will be held into the War Department. He defends bureau heads, cites rapid supply responses, and pins faults on commanding officers. He notes sickness at Chickamauga and camps, and discusses mustering out troops after sanitizing alerts and Yellow Fever concerns.
The transport Obdam sails with eight companies of the Second Wisconsin and Gen Miles's staff. The Chester follows with the Fourth Pennsylvania and other units. Judge Cox fines James Phillips five dollars and thirty days imprisonment.

The Rev. Daniel C. Potter, former pastor of the Baptist tabernacle, survived an attempted assassination at his Long Island City home. A window was fired into as he read in bed, with two bullets entering the blinds and one stopping in a Bible passage. Potter suspects the attack may be linked to prior disputes with John D. Rockefeller and the Taftist mission society.
Charles J T Pfinter was arrested on an affidavit by Charles J Gardner accusing him of intending to leave town without paying a 274.05 ice bill. Gardner ran Crescent ice camp absorbed by City ice, supplied at 2 25 a ton, and saw Pfinter packing for Cincinnati, leading to a diamond and person attachment.
Bicycle officers Holtz and Wallace and Capt. Nruger raided James Small in the Baldwin block and recovered parts of stolen money hidden in a clock chair seat and desk. A charge of petit larceny was continued to Thursday. The First Hobson Club of Wabash township filed incorporation papers, and Hoosier Cement Company of Clarke county shows 435000 capital stock.
Steeple climber Ward started Monday to remove the electrical illumination appliances from the soldiers' monument. The tearing down proved nearly as laborious as the original erection.
Gov office lines up special east gate for soldiers camp at the fair grounds. Guards will block citizen entry while attendees can see soldiers via a guard path with fake messengers. Secretaries Wilson and Waterman arrange muster-out details and field support for regiments returning home.

Seven Pullman coaches transported 115 sick soldiers from Camps Alg and Mears through Indianapolis en route to St Louis. The Third and Fourth Missouri volunteers rode the train, which paused briefly for fuel and water. None had seen active service. fevers and dysentery afflicted them.
Julia Russell a 21 year old colored resident of Norwood has been declared insane. Her parents testified she roams at night without explanation and threatened to shoot her younger sisters with a revolver.
Admiral Dewey urged Washington to send one battleship and an armored cruiser to Manila and stay to confer with President McKinley on the Philippines. He praised his crew, predicted more work at Manila, and discussed Aguinaldo’s Paris mission as the navy moves cautious on reinforcements.
A large crowd heard John B Cockhum present Ix of P swords offered by a New York store. Col John Conlen of the First Indiana received the sword for the regiment with the largest parade presence. Capt H T Hull of Noblesville won best popular captain in the First Indiana. Capt J N Briggs of New Albany was top popular captain outside the regiment. Swords praised for workmanship and mounting.
Congressman Overstreet asks the War Department to better care for Battery A on its voyage home from Porto Rico. He was assured the unit will be well looked after as it starts for home on Tuesday.
Forecast for Indianapolis and vicinity for the 386 hours ending 8 p m. Aug 30 calls for fair weather. Monday night and Tuesday are expected to be fair. Morning temperature at 7 am Monday was 72 degrees. Noon temperature Monday was 85 degrees and 2 pm reached 88 degrees.
Deputy Sheriff Charles Carter was arrested by Patrolmen Hite and Miller on Sunday after an alleged description match for a robber. Carter was released upon recognition at the police station. He claims he was struck in the mouth, which officers deny.
The Fountain square bicycle club led by Arthur Powers Bates H Secrest Parker Grey John Murphy and Vernon Whiteley started Sunday morning for a southern Indiana trip. They head first to Madison then Louisville Kentucky visiting Wyandotte Cave and other Indiana sites, planning to end their ride in Martinsville.
Major Ruth, brigade surgeon and Keokuk medical college professor, resigns to tell the truth about Camp Thomas. He claims hospital abuse, patient overcrowding, foul conditions, and false official reports. He sent a lengthy report to his governor detailing typhoid cases, nurse neglect, and unsanitary wards. Also, a transport to Montauk Point is sighted with six possible yellow fever cases aboard.
At Montauk Point on August 29, four deaths were recorded in the camp. Private William Boyle and Private Donovan, both malaria cases, Private Miller of the Twenty second Infantry with dysentery, and Private Hale of the Eighth Infantry with malaria. Col. Brown reported 7,820 in the camp general hospital and 40 in detention. One transport brought troops, including the Post battalion of the District of Columbia guards and others. Capt. Magruder said health was fairly good with 49 malaria and dysentery cases. one death on the transport was Private Bahtman of the District of Columbia guards from Brights disease.
At Good Wheeler Camp New York on August 29 General Wheeler reports he has secured a large shipment of fresh food and delicacies for 2,995 sick soldiers in camps not hospitals. He cites order 116 allowing hospital supply purchases up to 69 cents per man daily and says he will continue to order meals to relieve red tape and aid soldiers in need.
The navy ambulance ship Solace from Guantanamo arrived off the navy yard with 74 sick sailors and soldiers aboard. It anchored Monday morning after a quarantine report. Captain Dunlap visited Commodore Howison at the yard. No deaths occurred.
In New York on August 29 the baroness Wanda von Bodenbach known as Lillie Barrett dies at 18. Baron P de Linge swears to kill the man who led her astray claiming he will track him worldwide. The baroness heiress to an estate valued at 5 million dollars died Friday night on West Thirty eighth Street.
Three thousand Italians tried to lynch Tony Murto in Chicago after a quarrel left Vincinto afeodo dead. Murto fired into the mob wounding Thomas Roach in the head. Roach may die. Five wagonloads of police protected Murto from the mob.
Detectives Thornton and Weible investigate the theft of 224 dollars hidden in a sewing project by 86 year old Susan Morrison of 11078 West Street. Between 7 and 8 pm Saturday the comfort was ripped apart in a closet and cash stolen. The money was saved for a burial fund and funeral dignity.
John C. Mason, an Eddy and Merrill barber, appeared in police court as a witness against Thomas Hiser but was intoxicated and unable to testify. Mason was locked up for drunkenness and fined without witnesses after the trial was called.
Police seek suspects after a robbery and arson at HL C Schergens residence on Saturday night. Residents were away. firefighters found flames and a ransacked home with silver valued goods stolen.
The will probated Monday leaves all property to Henry Malpas's wife in trust for his children. Bond set at $2,300 covers personal property valued at $1,100.
