A clever swindle attempt failed at grocer Hammels on 110 Massachusetts Ave as a boy delivered a certified check from J R Ryan to cash 25 dollars. Hammel trusted the notes, but after handing over the money he sought a companion and soon learned the check was part of a scheme linked to a man near North Street and Massachusetts Ave. The envelope was returned when Ryan appeared denying knowledge of the check, and the supposed conspirators are being investigated.
Sluggish supply has peaches rising in price while watermelons and muskmelons are lower. Apples and grapes are plentiful with commission men handling hundreds of bushels daily. Vegetables grow scarce and celery runs. Oyster beds are productive and fish demand remains strong with white fish and salmon prices given.
