A faction of Indianapolis Democrats pushes for Mayor Taggart to be nominated by acclamation at Saturday’s convention while opposing wards threaten disruption. John Holtzman may be offered the city clerk post with Daly backing the plan, and Edward W. Little withdraws from police judge race as Daly gains support.
Albert Sahm secretary of the city committee disputes a resolution claim calling it a backfire. Democrats counter that emissaries used the resolution representing the committee. A precinct committeeman says copies were circulated and taken to other committeemen. An ex-officeholder notes several acts done by the committee without Sahm's knowledge.
Mayor Thomas Taggart will accept the nomination at the Democratic city convention Saturday. Thursday night 29 of his friends campaigned in every ward urging him to decline but the party would be hopeless if he refused on the eve of the convention. The nomination will be accepted.
Amid general confusion and Democrats divided over Taggart, reports say an independent Democratic ticket may form if Taggart is nominated. A Friday meeting of dissatisfied members yielded no concrete steps, with plans to wait until after the convention. If created, the ticket would nominate at a mass Democratic meeting and push a free silver platform.
The Our Standard edited by J. F. Callen accuses Samuel Morss of attending the Saratoga conference on the Van Wyck boom and alleges fake stories circulated to imply he was in Alaska. It says Sentinel editor Jake Dunn drafted resolutions for tomorrow's convention and notes Dunn refused free silver editorials due to not being nominated. Mayor Taggart warned William Jennings Bryan against Morss recently.
A messenger delivered a goodly batch of stage and balcony tickets to the Republican city committee headquarters Friday morning for Saturday's convention. Chairman Logisfon and Secretary Bowlus received them and appeared embarrassed, noting they had overlooked it was a nice compliment when they held their convention.
Reported killings of whites by blacks near Darien prompt a special armed citizen train. Warrants issued for 60 ringleaders, 35 jailed, jail under military guard. Post dispatch notes armed men and bloodhounds heading to Darien while Savannah reports no operator response.
Vice-president Davis of the Indianapolis water works and the park commissioners met to stop the Water club from using its recently bought land beside Riverside park. The water company may block the canal bicycle path if a club house is built and could hand the land to the city for park use if its title proves clear. otherwise the city may condemn the site. Commissioner Coffin said acquisition will occur by some means, despite doubts over proper conduct and proximity to the park.
The public school buildings will stay open Saturday to receive donations for Porto Rico relief. General solicitor P. G. Jordan arranged with the superintendent to keep them open Friday and Saturday. Outside city residents must prepay freight or expressage. send to Phineas G. Jordan c/o secretary of the Board of Trade Indianapolis. New contributors include Ward Bros. Drug Co and Mrs. Lawrence and Mrs. Christian of Jonesville with a gift of $1000 in women’s clothing.
Bellefontaine Street residents move names between petitions from Massachusetts to Fifteenth Street delaying the asphalt street improvement. The board of works will compare petitions to determine which has more supporters. City engineer instructed to learn which plan has the most signatures. project likely defeated.
Mayor Taggart signed a track elevation ordinance requiring railroad tracks to be elevated. The council passed it at a special session, and it becomes effective after two weeks publication. Enforcement starts in April, 1800 as specified by the ordinance.
Ole Allen and C J Gardner faced Lee Graff and Billy Sachs in a ten game match. Allen led with 1.847 average, Gardner 1.667, Graff 1.725 and Sachs 1.757. Three scores above 200 and a peak 215 gave a standout city performance.
Bell Tolin, long connected with the Union stock yards, has been appointed manager of the new Interstate stock yards. Difficulty in obtaining materials may delay the yard opening until September 10.

H J Russell of Sydney Australia, visiting Ottawa, says allied views of Filipino warfare are biased. He praises Filipino intelligence and governance noting elected representatives and modern amenities like electricity, arguing natives are not savage. He criticizes censorship of his Philippine dispatches.
Aug 25 Liberty for 20 dollars is described in a treaty between Gen Bates and the sultan of the Sulu archipelago. The accord grants broad U.S. powers and includes adoption of the American flag, slave liberty, land purchase with sultan’s permission, and respect for religious customs. Bates gave the sultan a gramophone after signing.
In Chicago on Friday the Take national social convention denounced imperialism as unjust and undignified. Delegates called the Philippine War dishonest and unfair, urging restraint and fair treatment of colonized peoples.
William J. Carlin of Pittsburgh, buyer of Premier steel works, visits Indianapolis again to survey ground and explore reopening the mills. He states no definite plan beyond the previous aim to resume operations if feasible.
Old Settlers of Indianapolis and Marion county want the city to buy a triangular tract at the fork of Washington street and White River to convert into a park and recreate the McCormack cabin. A meeting is planned next Friday at 2 p m in the circuit court room.

Judge Calderon, once Gibara magistrate, asserts that 20 men were killed by the Tenth Cavalry after unlawful arrests by Ernest Russell and Lieut Venegas. He says his removal followed his plan to probe the killings and that regional judges were suspended by American authorities.
Royal Robinson sues Indianapolis Sentinel company and Joseph E. Bell for 10000 damages over an Oct 12 1897 interview. He claims the article harmed his reputation and alleges bribery and political motives in the sewer contract dispute. Robinson says the exposure hurt his employment prospects.
George H. Cox aged 80 of 1105 English Ave. had a funeral at 3 PM Friday. Born in Canada, he moved to Indianapolis 27 years ago and lived at his home. A well known builder, his wife’s father was a Church of England bishop in Canada. Bishop Fowler of Buffalo is a nephew. Mrs. Cox died 18 years ago, and granddaughter Miss Lillian Cox of Cincinnati has lived with him since. A sister, Mrs. Joshua Gaskill, is the last Cox family member.
The Friends historical society plans a day at the old meeting house in Plainfield on Saturday. Members bring dinner baskets and hear reminiscences including sketches of White Lick Fairfield and Plainfield quarterly meetings and recitations by Martia Camby, Cyrus M Hobbs, and others with talks on Quaker influence.
