A troop train on the Siberian railroad derailed at Yorta station. 23 men died and nearly 40 were injured, including 22 soldiers and one guard. One officer among the injured. The Aug. 24 dispatch from St. Petersburg reports the catastrophe as a grave wartime accident with numerous casualties.
Indianapolis residents report two nights of dense cricket swarms driven by unknown air currents. Lights were dimmed as millions filled streets, with many crushed by crowds and vehicles. Reports spread across Indiana and Midwest states with fear of wider spread.
The Taft party reached Tacloban aboard the Logan and will await Legaspi. In Luzon they attended entertainments and a government ceremony featured a child dance. In Louisville Kentucky on August 4 two young African American boys were charged in separate killings. George O Neal aged about twelve is charged with striking a white boy playmate with a brick, while Wilit Green, about twelve, is charged with killing Ether Nesost by striking her on the head. Both suspects are colored.
Miss Anna Berry described Capt Taggart as irritable and fond of liquor, with her deposition detailing his temper and drinking at Fort Thomas and Fort Leavenworth. Emma Lyttle, a former cook and nurse for Taggart’s sons, testified that Taggart kept liquor in the house and that relations with Augustina were intimate, while Mrs Taggart’s friends observed the courtroom as the trial progressed.

Reactions from the reactionary press remain aggressive, attributing U.S. pressure as the boost to the peace drive and questioning Japan’s ability to meet creditor demands.
Police pallbearers will carry the casket for 7 EB Kregel o a Bt Vincent hospital death. Eight sergeants detailed by Superintendent Kreger to act as active pallbearers at the funeral at the family residence in 102 NM, Iiinotst, Baturtay, at 10 o clock Wednesday morning. Kregel was a large man and well known to the force and city staff. pallbearers to be chosen from his intimate friends.
Councilmen Eppert and Gasper pressed Mayor John W. Holtzman for written City Attorney Warrum input on Judge Baker’s decision and sought amendments to ensure city ownership after stockholders are paid. Holtzman declined, raising doubts about private control and trustee approval terms. The amended franchise will go to the Board of Public Works Friday for review and a conference with the council committee.
Deputy Boyd arrested C. A. Taughinbaugh, a local lawyer and candidate for the Democratic nomination for mayor of Youncie, for using postal services to solicit heirs and money. Distorted reports from the Bureau of Statistics note two banks have not yet completed rent reports, with $100 penalties for delays and hopes for swift submission.
Mrs Noah Russell testified in police court about her husband Russell Russell striking her at their Temple Avenue home in drunken anger. Judge Thomas E Whatton fined Russell costs and sentenced him to three days in the workhouse for assault and battery. The altercation also involved damage to furniture and a scuffle with neighbors before police restrained him.
Deputy Fish and Game Commissioner Earle, at his office Thursday, cited Thomas Thatcher of Indiantoptie for unlawfully possessing fish.
