Japanese report states Pekin fighting ended. President directs Gen. Chaffee to handle both military and diplomatic duties for the United States with Rockhill possibly assisting later. Updated telegrams describe Tien-Tsin and Tak u operations, hospital readiness, and casualties to date.
The American Board of Foreign Missions reported from Che-Foo that seven Pekin and Tung Chow missionaries along with the Chapins, Smiths, and Wyckoff were saved. The cable cites Psalm exxiv and the Bible verse about escaping the snare of the fowlers.
Washington reports Maj. Schriven says Pekin is in allied hands after Aug 17 telegram. The note signals foreign troops in the forbidden city for the first time, with fighting near Tien-Tsin prompting reinforcements and a long siege to secure a government and penalties.

Henry Zink reported a bottle of milk to Secretary Hurty revealing two water eels and moss fragments. Dr. Hurty traced the contamination to watered milk from stagnant pond water, noting 90 percent water and 2 percent fat.
James Noon appeared in Justice Smock's court on Tuesday asking if he had been arrested. A man claiming to be an officer charged him $2.50 to secure release from an arrest for stealing a knife. The frame company manager said he would pay, leaving the boy $2.50 poorer. The prosecutor plans to prosecute the employer for obtaining money under false pretenses and the other man for impersonating an officer.
An 87 year old, James Smith of Boise City Idaho, visited a police station asking for transport to Washington to collect a $7,600 claim for 1873 Indian related property loss. He claims filing 24 years ago at cost of $1,200 and says he fought in the Florida war with Gen Taylor. He worked as an interpreter on reservations and bets he could beat any man ten years younger in a fight.
A Lexington Avenue wedding ended at 3 a.m. when police arrested Dudley Ends and his best man Andrew Christian for assault and battery and disturbing the peace. The couple wed at a minister's home on Laurel Street then moved to 926 Laurel, where beer was stored. Neighbors complained of noise, and bicycle patrolmen Streit and Trimpe found the men with horns locked while attempting to calm the dispute.
Mme. Eliza Peters reports to police that a man calling himself McDonald left a child in her care a week ago Monday and has not returned. He offered $20 a week to care for it and promised to return next Wednesday. she requests a guardian be appointed.
Chairman Munro of the council health committee says the panel will report favorably on Billingsley’s anti for maldehyde ordinance. The measure makes possession of formaldehyde in milk an offense for dairymen, regardless of knowledge. The committee delays the report awaiting the city attorney’s view on conflicts with state law and will broaden the bill to cover other preservatives.
Mrs Elizabeth Hunter of 1503 N Senate Ave testified to the coroner that she has no idea where her child obtained carbolic acid, despite both her daughter and son affirming the lack of knowledge. The coroner pressed the matter but the mystery remains unsolved.
A bicycle collision injured 3 year old Letha Glazier at 315 S New Jersey St on Tuesday night while returning from the grocery. She sustained a small cut to her head.
The supreme court will decide what part of the human anatomy the term iron refers to and whether permanent injury there warrants damages. In Ezra Batson v. Lewinville the plaintiff claims a blacksmith piled iron on the sidewalk, causing him to fall and injure his left iron and suffer bruises.
Smiley Chambers, returning from southern Alaska mining, says miners in camp earn big wages and save all their money, with no way to spend it. He recalls going to the camp with 70 cents and returning with the same amount. Burdock Blood Bitters is recommended to strengthen the stomach and prevent indigestion.
