The Society for the Advancement of Science held its 37th annual session in the Indiana statehouse assembly hall. Gov. Chase praised Indiana’s minerals and writers, and Prof. Goodale spoke on past misunderstandings. Attendees included Lew Wallace, John Hay, Ridpath, and Constance Fauntleroy Runcie, with events, receptions, and exhibits planned through the week.
The meeting discussed the destruction of valuable industries and rising commodity costs in New Orleans. Papers were presented by Prof E W Claypool and others from Cincinnati Minnesota and Lincoln with afternoon sessions featuring Lazanby, Blessing, and Miles. Officers and new members were elected as the society adjourned for winter.
In Washington Aug 20 the senate morning session saw Quay's resolution taken up with Hoar offering an amendment to include the election bill and a substitute to demand the previous question. George Campfield, long tied to James house saloon, was assaulted and fined for fighting. Justice Alien fined Mahlon Wells for brutal beating of Isaac Davis and contempt of court. Wells had a small cannon and Cincinnati detective badge. W J McCarthy of Potter straw factory burned by natural gas. head and shoulders burned, likely to lose sight. incident occurred Friday after hours on N Westat.
A violent cyclone swept through Wilkes-Barre and nearby towns around 5 pm on Tuesday, killing at least 11 and causing extensive destruction. Buildings collapsed, trains and power lines failed, and residents faced wreckage and fear. Notable losses include Hazard wire rope works and several local depots, churches, and mines, with hundreds more affected. Survivors recount chaotic scenes, injuries, and a dramatic rescue effort amid uprooted trees and rain.
A Norfolk divided Old Colony line wreck at President's bridge near Quincy caused 14 deaths and about 40 injuries. The Woods Halle express plunged 12 feet, engine buried, forward coach toppled, passengers trapped as fire and toxic steam spread through cars. A 12 year old named Perry Haley living on Bates Street was arrested by Officer Elmer Guire on a grave charge of trespass involving a railroad trestle at the C H D shops area between Hast and New Jersey street. Reports say a switching engine narrowly avoided a fall on the trestle after an open switch and near-misses have occurred previously. Two other boys with Haley corroborate the claim, and reform school action may follow.
Birmingham Aug 20 Lieut Walter Nunnelle of the Woodstuck guards from Anniston Ala has completely lost his mind after going crazy several days ago. He is in the Tutcalooss asylum. Physicians attribute the illness to cigarette smoking. He is 21 and an associate editor of the Anniston News.
Cashmere Lucid and Murphy were tried by Mayor Sullivan on charges of striking Mrs Wilson of Sharpest in the head with a brick. Murphy was acquitted. Lucid was fined ten dollars. Cashmere was bound over to the grand jury for assault with intent to kill.

The city council instructed the ordinance committee to draft a measure granting equal franchise rights to all natural gas companies, aiming to supersede a prior privilege for the Southern Indiana Gas Co. A Lebanon trip by a committee seeking Maj. Doxey’s view is reported. the Southern Indiana firm may abandon its field despite a $217,900 investment.
Cincinnati August 20. Governor Foraker in an interview says the election law applies to the nation not parts and would aid southern business interests by ensuring free political action. He notes Goodwin's boycott policy is consistent with his Ku Klux Klan membership, framing the interview as a bloody shirt era remark.
