Wilkes Barre Pa August 18 John Mitchell president of the United Mine Workers plans to travel to New York to meet J P Morgan seeking his help for settlement by arbitration and conciliation. He aims to press operators for a settlement while reports of such moves are unconfirmed as Maltby colliery edges toward operation with preparations underway.
In Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania on August 18 work recommenced at the Maltby colliery of the Lehigh Valley Coal Company under the protection of 10 armed coal and iron policemen. The site is stockaded and illuminated at night by electric lights visible to 200 yards. Company officials decline to specify worker numbers but indicate enough men are employed to mine coal and begin shipments soon.
Gov Charles D Kimball of Rhode Island must face a slander and malicious persecution suit filed by promoter Andrew J Power seeking 150000 dollars. Kimball earlier began legal action against Power for alleged fund misappropriation, turning the tables in the case.
Cyrus Robbins twenty, from 301 North Capitol Avenue, stepped on a nail a week ago and now suffers from lockjaw. He was somewhat better on Monday than Sunday, but remains in grave condition as recoveries from lockjaw are rare at City Hospital.

Train No 4 on the Peoria & Eastern left Indianapolis at midnight Sunday and was wrecked Monday morning west of Rising Illinois. A washout caused the derailment. Engineer Qorham, Fireman Blount, and Postal Clerk Peckham were lightly injured. no passengers were hurt. The engine left the rails and two coaches were thrown from the track.
Robert Barclay sues the city and Marion County Construction Company for 155 alleging failure to pay statutory wages for street cleaning work. He claims 20 cents per hour for eight hours, but received only 1.25 a day. The notice invites readers to use THE SUN’s liners on page seven.
The State Board of Tax Commissioners sustained James Carter’s appeal and raised assessed values on all six major Indianapolis banks including American National, Capital National, Columbia National, Fletcher National, Indiana National, and Merchants’ National. The board refused to disclose its stock-valuation method, stating it used property comparisons in the city. It also ruled on multiple other appeals affecting Knights and Ladies of Honor, the Indianapolis News, St. Joseph County Savings Bank, land bond contracts, real estate assessments, and individual appeals from Crawfordsville, Daviess, Whitley, Allen, and De Kalb counties.
McCray vows to appeal again after failing to present his case to the Marion county board in time. He says township assessor Jefferson delayed until one day before the county board adjourned, keeping this year’s assessment final. He plans a written protest and a new appeal on April 1.

John Duckworth a section hand living at Bridgeport attempted to kill Mamie Goodwin a domestic at Charles Sonnefield home 3306 Washington St Sunday night gunfire grazed her cheek. Duckworth fled after the shot jealous over a rival named Charles Ketrow. He tailed toward a barn then vanished into a cornfield after calling to Goodwin to come to him and promising not to hurt her.
Prominent South Omaha packing men say the Cudahys have sold their packing interests to the packers' trust for 21 million. The deal would include all packing properties of Michael John and Edward Cudahy with transfer on September 1. Edward Cudahy is at Mackinac Wisconsin. Local manager Taliaferro says he knows nothing of the transfer.
Chicago on August 18 sees wheat lower with September at 69 1/4 to 69 1/2 and December around 66 1/4. Corn edges up to 51 1/2 for September and 40 1/2 to 40 3/4 for December. Oats improve with September near 32 1/2 and December around 28 1/4. Provisions list pork at 15.87 to 16.00, lard around 10.20 to 10.22, ribs near 9.62 to 9.66.
A prisoner named Wing escaped from police headquarters and was recaptured after entering his sweetheart's Perkins home. He had stolen bicycles and left bags at a hotel. A girl gave a key to a room in a hotel, enabling entry before officers recovered him.
Boston August 18. B sought to claim rent from Jin a young married woman and wife of an iron worker. The real estate man declared he would collect $25 rent from Martin’s houses. Jin said she would have the rent when he called August 1 but would have it by the following week. She claimed he preferred kissing her neck but failed.
