Dispatches from Shanghai and Washington confirm allies entered Pekin on Aug 15 after a day of fighting. Cham Long Tong Chi gates fell, legations remained safe, and both sides reported casualties with Chinese losses about 300 to Japanese 100.
Washington reports that Pekin is in allied hands and the relief of the legations is hailed as a historic siege victory. The small force of Marines who defended the legations is lauded, with Americans and Japanese leading the assault and the task of restoring order now to fall to allied troops.
Reports from Co Meade and Maj Waller describe an exceedingly fierce engagement at Tien-Tsin. Many American soldiers are recommended for promotion for bravery and the American force is praised for gallant service. General Doorward blames himself for Col Liscum’s death after a route error by the Ninth Infantry.
British Indian troops recalled earlier are disembarking in Shanghai while France sends 4,700 troops from Tong-King and lands marines this Saturday. The Yangtze valley near Wou Chang remains highly tense as forces in the region mobilize under Viscroy Chang Shi.

A dispatch from Gen. Yamaguchi reports allied forces including Russians Japanese Americans and British assaulting Pekin on Wednesday. Japanese entered by the eastern gates after detonating explosives while Americans and British took Tung Quien gate and reached the legations. Casualty figures cite over 100 Japanese killed and about 400 Chinese killed with other losses undetermined.
In San Antonio August 18 two telegraph operators swindled the Bank of Uvalde out of 4500 dollars. C. E. Fisher sought to draw the funds on J Woods and Sons bankers of San Antonio and after a confirming reply was forged by Jack Reif using the Woods signature. The pair fled to Mexico once the scheme was uncovered when San Antonio bankers received the forged notification.
The park commissioners post a sign to exclude peddlers and solicitors, triggering a Boo gang boycott of the office and its workers. County Commissioner John McGregor posts notices in county offices and donates one to the park board as hold-ups by the public escalate.

Secret Service monitors all European steamers as the case undergoes investigation with potential deportations or prosecutions.
The Evening World reports fourteen alleged anarchists are in custody at the detention prison or the immigration bureau. They planned to surround President McKinley and strike with knives or pistols, but guards expect no escape as they sacrifice their lives for their beliefs. Secret service and McKinley guard precautions are in place to prevent harm.
Chief Wilkie of the Secret Service denies that additional precautions were taken to protect President McKinley from assassination.
New York August 18 The dispatch describes an anonymous Naples letter saying Maresca would sail to the United States to kill President McKinley with a band of anarchists. Consul Boyton relayed the tale to Washington and noted the writer may be an anarchist gang member. Burglars and deputy state officials are also mentioned in a separate note.
