The couple left for a southern trip. Gustave Pfeiffer entertained at a house and garden fete Thursday for Mr and Mrs Brand and Mr and Mrs William F Cook of Cincinnati, Miss Moore of Rochester, Mr Neal of Grand Rapids, Mich, and Mr Rous of Jeffersonville.
Dr Curryer of the State board of medical examination and registration says no official action records any medical school has been refused recognition. A Sun representative viewed a typed list of allegedly unrecognized colleges. Separately the city monitors garbage disposal at the crematory reporting 60 loads delivered to the farm and plans a new chemical steam furnace to destroy waste while the old furnace handles night soil.
The secretary of the State board of health returned from Seymour after inspecting water systems and sewage facilities. He traveled to Crothersville and visited three country school houses noting they were filthy and unsanitary and will issue recommendations in the upcoming bulletin.

NO DICE J L Rappaport a S Illinois street saloonkeeper was fined 10 dollars and costs in police court Friday for allowing dice to be used in his saloon. Abe Levi alias Levi Rome also arrested Thursday night on a similar charge. His case was continued in police court Friday until July 20. Levi has prior convictions under the Nicholson law and Judge Cox warned that another conviction could revoke his license. He has given the police a great deal of trouble.
Robert Livingst on Reade, Yale alumnus, lawyer and former millionaire, was pronounced insane and ordered to an asylum. About $22,000 of his fortune remains. his mental decline is blamed on drink and chloral. In April he attempted suicide, stating weariness of life. Reade is reported as Josie Mansfield’s husband, linked to the Stokes murder of Jim Fisk years ago.
The State board of tax commissioners will hear cases next week with Monday: H C Barlow and St John Boyte for the Kentucky and Indiana bridge company. Tuesday: C O Bradford and T J Meagher for Wagner palace car company and Michigan Central railroad. Wednesday: H O Pickens for Pennsylvania railroad and Western Union telegraph company. Thursday the governor and staff will be in Chicago for the Logan monument unveiling and the board will not meet. Friday: President Ingalls for the Big Four and John G Williams for Vandalia. Saturday: attorney Tascott for Chicago & Erie. The board also urges county assessors to tax building and loan association stock, noting some counties have omitted this.
Barney Raineir aged 27 died at his home at 225 Cantrast after being overcome by heat last week. He leaves a widow and had worked for several years as a cabman with the Frank Bird transfer company. The body was shipped to Isker's Station by Undertaker Hermann on Friday morning.
The city controller’s clerk Arthur H. Byfield has resigned to become superintendent of the Stevenson building. Controller Johnson has picked Byfield’s successor but will not reveal the name until Saturday.
Receiver W. T. Malott of the Vandalia railroad submits six months of receivership accounts from November 14, 1896, to May 31, 1897. Receipts total 4,017,515.95 while disbursements amount to 3,253,000.00, reflecting the financial activity of the period.

Boston July 16 The missing Grace Stevenson’s mother received a July 7 letter from East St. Louis signed Grace asking for 50 dollars to return home. Money to be mailed to Mary Keilar East St. Louis TI. Family calls the letter a probable fraud.
Professor Love staged a dramatic balloon ascent at Great Ripple park on Thursday afternoon. He attached a four foot diameter bell to the balloon and tried a risky experiment, hoping to add interest to the feat. He and his parachute were released but the bell failed to open and the balloon drifted away. The crowd doubted the stunt a fake as the balloon landed in a tree and Love was dumped to the ground about 30 feet away with only minor injuries.
Francis J. Reinhard addressed the German American Democratic club urging unity and party over personal gain. He warned Democrats to resist Republican plots and select a mayor with party strength, noting that defeating enemies requires Democratic unity. John W. Holtzgman, J. E. McCullough, and John W. Kealing also spoke in support.
