Gillenormand and the Basque Nicolette Theory
In this chapter, M. Gillenormand adopts a theory about married life where a husband abdicating finances to his wife leads to her wielding control over money and affairs. He recounts how his own second wife managed his fortune, keeping him a widower with a minor annuity, while he names servants by regional origins and nicknames his maid Nicolette after a Cordon Bleu cook offers a wage and name.

Chapter VI reveals Gillenormand’s mock grandeur and family drama
In Gillenormand’s aging world, a baseless claim of paternity triggers scoffs and schemes. The chapter chronicles his feigned aristocratic renown, two illegitimate children, and a mercurial charity, revealing a man who swindled yet pretentiously defended his status while clinging to old codes and snuff.

The two Gillenormand sisters in a tale of virtue and fantasy
The elder Gillenormand, a proud prudish widow with little kindness, guards a hidden world of vanity and pious ritual. The younger, ethereal and devoted to heroic dreams, marries her ideal man only to die young. Their different paths define a household of aged constraint, whispered secrets, and a stern grandfather’s sea of discipline.
