Eleven men are killed and thirty workers in the tunnel at the Cleveland water works crib No 2. Twenty two of the crib crew are rescued while eight perish or drown. Fire crews arrive by 4 a m and control is established by 4 50 am. The cause remains a mystery.
The Aug 14 Cleveland report lists drowned workers John Martin Mike Snyder Arthur Hasty and Victor Kaufman Canton among five unidentified dead from a crib fire three miles offshore. Rescues saved 21 men and one woman as flames devoured the crib after a 2:30 a m explosion. Police may charge contractors with criminal negligence. Indianapolis workers Floyd Payne and John Walker were among the injured?
In MriTTburg, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday masked intruders armed with knives and carbolic acid assaulted Miss Caroline Krause, binding and wounding her before ransacking Jos Laughrey’s store. They attempted to force acid down her throat, recovered, then fled after Laughrey returned. A $39500 diamond was stolen.
The state populist committee plans a meeting at the Enterprise hotel on Sept 318 to decide on a time and place for a next year’s nominating convention. Leaders from the fusionists and middle of the road factions discuss possible unification.
An elderly man petitioning the governor for clemency for John Higgins meets delay as the governor's staff cites engagement with the State Tax Board. The father recites his son's dealings with the firm Murphy Hitchen & Co during prayers, noting he handled funds for the firm. Higgins, a former councilman, was convicted of soliciting a bribe from D. Leaders vow to keep order and prevent disturbances amid ongoing talks on possible return-to-work terms.
