Dispatches from Shanghai and London report the August 6 battle at Kang-Tsun near Pekin. About 20,000 Chinese attacked as Col. Daggett led a Fourteenth Infantry charge. American casualties totaled ten killed and 55 wounded, with British and Russian losses also heavy.
Two Pekin couriers report Li Ping Heng arrived from the south with troops and set two batteries on the city wall near the Tientsin legations. For two days he shelled the area while the head of the missionary board was killed attempting to obtain provisions.
The Allgemeine Zeitung notes a Franco-German military accord being negotiated while other powers may let their ministers depart as Russia leads. In Pekin De Giers set to travel to Tien-Tsin, and a Yang-Tsun clash ends with 20,000 Chinese opposing the allies defeated. Japanese casualties total 200 killed and wounded.

Mrs Sophia Walter aged 78 of 1028 Southeast ern avenue died Saturday at 11 am from paralysis linked to heat. She had been weak from heat, aided to her room Friday night. Groans at 3 am prompted neighbors to enter. door locked, she was found on the floor dressed for street and never revived. She planned to go to an old ladies home Monday.
Frank Ellis was stabbed in the left side by Richard Bryant during a Saturday night dispute at the Indianapolis homing mills over work start time. Ellis's wounds were deep but not dangerous. Bryant fled before police arrived.
Monday morning on Washington Street two missionaries drew a crowd of about 50 with tales of a newspaper report on Charles Verrell's confession and a dig at the Adams Express Company. A debate with other onlookers nearly turned into a fistfight as discussions of work and wealth followed.
Dr H P Iliff of Newark says the oscillation cure for tuberculosis is utterly false and that he has never spoken the attributed quotes or had tuberculosis. He notes the method is too new to judge and suggests a malicious purpose behind the reports.

The Indianapolis Brewing Company learned Monday morning that their Dusseldorfer beer, the sole brand they displayed, won the gold medal at the Paris exposition amid many competing brands.
County officials continue to distribute paper flags bearing McKinley and Roosevelt. Deputy Sheriff Jim McNulty was seen riding along Pennsylvania Street with a bundle under his arm. The county commissioners act as chief distributors and supply all applicants. The courthouse windows on the top three floors displayed the pictures the day before Bryant's notification.
Charles R H Ferrell, a former Adams Express employee, confessed to fatally shooting Messenger Charles Lane during a robbery on a Panhandle train. He said love for Miss Lillian Costlow and debt drove the crime, giving part of the loot to his fiancée and shipping evidence to Lockport, New York. Detectives recovered Lane's revolver and the loot, leading to Ferrell's arrest at the Costlow home.

Charles H. Ferrell, convicted killer, repeated his confession on Monday. He focuses on his sweetheart and urged officials to bring her to him. He says he killed Messenger Lane near Milford Center and will be tried in Union County then Marysville. Police recovered $2,000 in express money orders Ferrell had discarded.
