The Pacific nail steamship Columbia arrived at New York on Aug 10 with the body of Charles W. Riggin the martyred boatswain of the U S steam ship Baltimore on board. A pine coffin of remains was moved from a porthole for escorted transport to Philadelphia delegates then to the dead sailor’s home as John R. Riggin his brother and two sisters met the body without pier ceremonies.
Cineaco reports seven casks of choice wine from the private cellars of the king of Wurtemburg were received and removed from the custom house. On August 21 the king’s subjects drink freely and Swabians in the city will join a celebratory picnic to toast his majesty.

The Runeberg reversed engines and tried to aid, but darkness and rapid sinking hampered rescue efforts.

A hundred seventy two years ago Eli Macy, 22, died crossing the Wabash near Peru Indiana. His grave on the riverbank became known as the stranger's grave and is still tended by visitors who place flowers. The tale recounts how Macy was buried by natives after drowning and how relatives later recovered his body. He left a note requesting burial where found, and a stone slab marks the epitaph Eli Macy Drowned May 1523 Aged 22 years.
P J Sheridan crushed between a wagon and a safe at his farm near Moxte Vesta Cal Aug 10 may die from injuries. He was famed Invincible linked to Cavendish Burke assassination in Phoenix Park and claimed to be No 1 in the plot. Born Mayo, he later ran a hotel in Sligo and traveled as an organizer of the Invincibles. He fled to France then to this country evading extradition while aiding Pat Ford's Irish World role.
Report from Pirrspune on August 10 chronicles violence at Carnegie union mills. A non union worker, John Reams, was beaten by Edward Zimmer and Thomas Connors. police intervened and suspects were arrested. Gompers indicated no boycott decision yet, possible within ten days. Threat letters circulated to Alderman McMasters, Carnegie officials, and prosecutors. By August 16 both sides claimed victory in the Homestead strike, mills faced desertions, and union calls for a broad boycott met with resistance.
Isaac Slaughter of Beck Hannon West Virginia killed his brother Tom with a butcher knife during a dispute over cards on Sand Run six miles from town Tuesday night. Slaughter fled the scene after the fatal stabbing.

The case involved Col King and widow Mrs Pillow in a murder tied to slander and attempted divorce. Posten, the opposing lawyer, was fatally shot after King’s murder of Posten as he waited to salute a woman.

The Board of public works opened bids Wednesday for three sewer projects. Washington street sewer bids ranged from 0.87 to 11.90 per final foot with multiple companies. Sewer from Pogue's Run to Wyoming street showed bids from 5.32 to 6.18 per lineal foot. Mississippi street sewer bids were 15.95 to 18.55 per lineal foot. Bids referred to the engineer for review.
On Wednesday morning Wells glass company at Harvey Illinois requested Sheriff Gilbert for a force to prevent striker interference.
