An enthusiastic Irvington temperance meeting at the Methodist church launched a permanent sinking fund. The Anti-Saloon league aims to reassure remonstrants they will not bear court costs if a remonstrance fails. Pledges were collected and church representatives will promote the fundraiser citywide.
City Controller Breunig ordered City License Inspector Tullis to close four saloons and block a new one, placing five on a blacklist. Saloons tied to J M Taylor, George Dorden, George Schanz, A Leadig, and Pete Brown face shutdowns for operating without required city licenses or with restricted licenses. The Capital City Brewing and Indianapolis Brewing companies are linked to affected establishments.
County commissioners awarded ten bridge and culvert contracts. Bids ranged from $1,000 up, with George W. Fife winning $7,170 for a Crooked Creek bridge in Washington township. W. C. Smith secured multiple culvert and bridge contracts in Franklin, Indian Creek, and Lawrence townships. H. W. Tielking, H. F. Hackeom, and C. S. Raney also had bids accepted.
A young 8?-year-old boy named David Finney aided Chief Robert Metzger and detectives Holtz and Smith by visiting saloons and identifying liquor sellers. Warrants will be issued for the saloon keepers, who face charges of selling to a minor. The funeral for Alonzo Greene Smith former Indiana attorney general was set for Wednesday at 2 p.m. at 1606 N Pennsylvania St Indianapolis with Rev. Lewis Brown of St Pauls Episcopal church in charge. Pallbearers include Thomas Taggart William A Ketcham Samuel O Pickens Frank Edenharter Leon Bailey Judge Joseph Shea. friends William Fitzgerald and Joseph T Fanning attended. A bar meeting in the supreme courtroom adopted a memorial praising Smiths life and service.

Special to The Sun reports Frederick Oppenheimer a retired jeweler killed by an electric shock in his Old Fort Place residence. The death is linked to a cross contact between a stray or displaced wire and a high tension trolley cable near his home.
Indiana Refining's H L Hutson arrives with oil sprinklers to test road oiling near Marion county. Officials consider oiling the fair ground road first due to heavy traffic. The process removes dust, lays a two to three inch crust, and aims to reduce future wear. If successful, all county roads may be oiled.
Weight and measure inspector Isidor Wulfson, at odds with Standard Oil in Indianapolis, hoped to brief Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis on Indianapolis short measures. He found Landis briefly in the local federal court, but the judge was too busy for any conversation. Wulfson expects a longer meeting when Landis returns.
United Press reports 250 sailors from warships guard Casablanca after recent clash between sailors and Moors. Authorities believe further outbreaks can be prevented as order is temporarily restored.
Senator Albert J. Beveridge of Indiana marries Katherine Spencer Eddy of Chicago at the American Embassy in Berlin in a simple noon ceremony. Best man is John T. McCutcheon. The couple depart for a confidential honeymoon and plan to return to Indianapolis in October.
W W Spencer testified for Mollie Doolittle accused of selling oleomargarine as butter at an east market stand. He claimed oleomargarine is better than two thirds of butter, buying two pounds at a time to spread on bread. Doolittle fined ten dollars and costs. Groff fined ten. Russell discharged. Meat dealer raid cases postponed as attorney could not identify clients.
Mrs. Hertha A. Bence charges neglect and heavy drinking by Frank 8. Bence and files for divorce. She also seeks a reasonable alimony award in the action filed Wednesday in the local court.

Judge G W Stubbs visited White's Manual Labor Institute near Wabash Indiana to review Indianap polis boys and assess their progress. The private institute spans 640 acres with modern buildings and grounds, housing about 200 inmates, including a few girls, and was formerly an Indian school run by the Friends.
In Belfast Ireland on August 7 troops seized control amid a coal strike and street disturbances. Soldiers ordered to fire if mobs become violent, raising fears of bloodshed as striking coal and carters clash with employers and police.
William Nicewander was fined $25 and costs by Justice of the Peace Holmes on a charge of practicing medicine without a license. Ray Hicks pressed the charges after Nicewander attempted to set Hicks's broken ribs at Dr. Henry Hardhner's office. Hicks paid only part of a $20 fee and sought insurance papers, which Nicewander could not sign due to lacking a license. Holmes will report the matter to the State Board of Medical Examination and Registration.
Judge Kene saw Landis return to Chicago after ordering the sale of the Mount Pleasant Oil property in Delaware County at not less than 10,000. The sale was requested by the receiver the Marion Trust Company and other creditors. Landis will return to Indianapolis to hear patent infringement cases next Thursday.
Bicycle Officers Kitzmiller and Trimpe captured Harrison Weaver after hours of pursuit. He is charged with cutting Theodore Barnaby who lies at City hospital and with striking Fred. McNarmey on the head with a dump bar from a gravel wagon. Case set for police court August 14.

In Dayton Ohio on Wednesday authorities decided not to charge Markowitz brothers and sister in the murder of Anna Markowitz. Abraham Cohen, Anna's companion, died from wounds, while Cohen Jr and Nathan transported Cohen to Indianapolis for burial. An autopsy showed the wounds, Bertha Markowitz stories, and family turmoil surrounded the case as police prepared an administrator’s appointment.
