Pittsburg and surrounding mills face a general strike after President Shaffer orders action affecting 6 500 workers in Newcastle and signaling broader walkouts. Nonunionists migrate toward Wheeling as union rank and file prepare for a long, costly battle.
Conster nation gripped the Clark mill strike area as Supt Brown began startup of the 10 and 12 inch mills at the regular hour with about 100 men and boys. Brown claimed the entire plant would be running before week’s end. He said no trouble was encountered.
Samuel Gompers, president of the Federation of Labor, was queried about reports he would travel to Pittsburgh to meet President Shaffer on aiding the amalgamated workers. He evaded questions. An official said the federation cannot order a strike. they can act after a strike is ordered with advice and financial assistance as appropriate.
Chicago August 7 A history professor Edwin Erle Sparks of the University of Chicago warns in a class lecture that a period of financial low mood will follow an era of prosperity, signaling a coming economic downturn for the United States.

Wellsville remains calm with four mills running and two idled. Deserters from strikers continue working and do not fear job loss. Observers believe the Shaffer strike order will not affect Wellsville unless allied trades are included.
The tin and sheet mill strike depletes tin plate and sheet steel stocks used in enamel ware. Manufacturers, on Wednesday, advanced tin and enamel prices by 10 percent and expect further increases if the strike lingers.
