In Shamokin Pa on August 4 a disastrous freight wreck and powder explosion occurred on the Philadelphia and Reading line near Weldy’s siding seven miles west. Engineer Michael Smok and Conductor Alex Smith were killed and Fireman Dreishhak seriously injured. The fast freight No 7 carried explosives. a dropped door blocked the track, derailing the locomotive and destroying 12 cars. The blast ignited nearby barns. Smok’s badly burned body was recovered from under the engine. Victims resided in Tamaqua.
