After a shipwreck the rescued Augusta and Mr Meeson endure a perilous drift at sea. A second boat searches for survivors, finds a wrecked cutter, and eventually sights Kerguelen Land. They reach a fjord with two ruined huts and plan to shelter, facing a bleak, wet wait for rescue.
Augusta and two sailors survive a wreck by hasty huts in a fjord, sharing scarce rations and a driftwood fire as rain and cold bite. Meeson grows ill from drink and exhaustion while Augusta nurses Dick, keeps spirits up with tales, and watches as the group faces further peril and possible death.
