William F. Moore announces his bid after Mayor Taggart’s declination and Daggare letter secrecy. Moore vows to fight hard, denies an anti Taggart campaign, and plans to file his certificate Friday afternoon.
The edit notes Taggart will not be deterred by the letter as the committee cannot block his name on the ballot. George Williamson withdraws after a joke claim, while Fanning may release the signers. Ward struggles loom with Moriarity Colter and a new saloon-keeper candidate Ernest Schuffer in contention.
In Carrollton Mississippi on August 2 a mob of about 500 whites removed Mrs Betsy McCray her daughter Ida and son Belfield from the county jail and hanged them from a tree near town. At least 500 bullets were fired into their bodies as punishment for the murder of Mr and Mrs Taliferro earlier in July Ida reportedly confessed to involvement in the crime.
A mob dragged two Black men from jail and killed them before sheriff and judge could act. Governor Longino arrived after the execution and urged obedience to law, while reports said others involved in the Taliaferro murder faced potential lynching.
The temperance movement claims power from 1786 ward 4 voters to shut down saloons in ward 4 and bar renewal of licenses. Capt. Eli F. Ritter says licenses will not be renewed, and withdrawals of power of attorney will be required for any new licenses. Officials plan to press on to drive saloons out of wards 1 2 and 3, with ward 4 continuing to push forward. The group will not aim to close saloons on primary day, citing legal debate and differing opinions on election day enforcement.
The executive committee of the governor's office postponed the Indiana soldiers and sailors monument dedication from October 1901 to the third Tuesday in May 1903. Wat Rosalie aged 18 and Susie 21 daughters of Lorenzo Dowell were killed by lightning while standing under a tree near their father’s barn. The bolt struck the barn and another child nearby was unconscious, and twelve head of livestock burned. two more people died elsewhere in separate lightning incidents in Ocean City Maryland and Mississippi City Louisiana.
Frederick M. Ayres and Arthur T. Smith will depart early Monday by automobile for Buffalo and the Pan-American exposition. The trip, potentially the longest yet attempted by Indianapolis enthusiasts, uses a large gasoline motor like the Alexander Winton car. They will travel via the National Road to Columbus, Ohio, then north through Ohio toward Buffalo, with possible continuation to New York, New England, and Boston if no accidents occur.

County attorney Hugo recommends separate physicians while paying the attending physician a nominal fee to save $1.25 per inquest.
George Elis, 36, son of Thomas Ellis, 80, Bradshaw Sr., was declared insane on Friday by an affidavit from his father. A commission including Justice Sheppard and Drs Wagner and J. Fletcher heard the case. Dr Wagner served as attending physician and medical examiner. Papers will not be sent to the asylum until acceptance of the attending physician as medical examiner is decided. Elis is not violent.
The Sun previews a second prize for its Pan American trip offer: one round trip to the Buffalo exposition plus cash for entrants who gain 30 or more subscribers but do not win first prize. The notice urges immediate call at Sun offices to participate.
Roy Huffman Jr by next friend Flora A Davis sues Indianapolis street railroad and officer Burnett for 5000 dollars claiming assault with a mace at Fairview Park on Sunday July 21 after a riot that led to arrests of several involved in a pickpocket incident. Burnett allegedly attacked Huffman after being struck.
A southbound College ave. car 542 halted suddenly when a strong gust lifted six passengers’ lids at once. The motorman rang the bell thrice and stopped, seeing several bareheaded riders scramble away as straw hats rolled like golf balls. Charles Daniels, shot in the throat at Fairview, was up and around Friday.
Thomas McKenzie 417 Virginia Ave is to stand trial in police court on the embezzlement of $18 from the Barbers' union. He claims a bookkeeping shortage of about $8 instead of $18 and says the arrest stems from plans to join work in a nonunion shop. Aug. 6 sets the trial date.
New York report says E Lawrence Godkin former editor of the Post is dying of Brights disease in London. He gained fame for his battles against political rings in the United States.
