Reports from Key West say Mariel near Havana was shelled Friday evening by the blockading squadron. Rear Admiral Sampson with the New York bombarded Port Cabana eight miles from Havana, turning land batteries into debris in minutes. The action aimed to provoke a larger engagement.
A Havana dispatch confirms the Friday night bombardment of Port Cabanas near Havana.Two shore batteries engaged the area at 6 p.m. Friday while the torpedo boat Porter approached the coast.
