Washington on April 30 reports Judge Jackson greatly improved and due back from Nashville. Public opinion splits on his stance with friends saying he opposes the tax and others predicting a decision to sustain the income tax at a rehearing. A full bench will hear arguments with lawyers nationwide in attendance.
The Board of works awarded multiple sewer contracts on Tuesday. R P Dunning won the Chesapeake street sewer project at 1.38 per lineal foot, Mansfield & Allen earned Meridian street from Ray to McCarty at 0.87, and Gansberg & Roney secured several alley sewers from Fourteenth to Twelfth streets and Coburn to McKernan at 0.64 to 0.76. The street sweeping bid near Union Station was far lower than others, and Indiana Paving Brick Co. won Pearl street brick paving projects at 2.09 and 1.91 per lineal foot.
The Story Competition remains open while the six liner poetry contest closes with this issue. A mass of verses has arrived and will be reviewed quickly. Awards will be given accordingly. The story contest closes May 12 and entrants should submit stories immediately to ensure timely prize consideration.
A 325 voice high school chorus rehearses Samson and Delilah for the May musical festival. Selected by Prof. Arens from 600 aspirants, the chorus promises to exceed average. Performances run May 12 to May 15 at Tomlinson Hall with two matinee showings during the festival week.
In Chicago on State and Spring streets Officers Golden and McDermott attempted to arrest three Black desperadoes. A gunfight erupted early Tuesday morning. One suspect was killed while the others escaped. Officer Golden was shot in the thigh and calf. Officer McDermott’s coat was perforated four times, though he suffered no serious injuries.
In Bristol Tennessee on Monday Mrs Martha Wallen of Blackwater Virginia stabbed Mrs Jane Wallace to death with a pitchfork after jealousy over her husband’s closeness. The report also notes the Knights of Pythias in session at the local hall with routine business and a parade, and a horse race at Newmarket where Michael Dwyer’s Banquet won a 2000 guineas trial plate.
Emma Mundt a 26 year old New York woman killed herself with a scissors blade during a grim period after six family deaths. She nursed the dying relatives and faced the illness of the only surviving child, then chose suicide rather than endure further loss.
London April 30 Mrs Wilde wife of the disgraced dramatist will sue for divorce based on terrible charges raised against him.
