A Bulawayo dispatch says Matabele forces, discouraged by defeats before Bulawayo, have retreated ten miles from the town. Later reports add a coachload of ammunition arriving from the south as Matabeles again press to surround Bulawayo and block the Tati road.
A grain mill owned by J. N. & J. Hanson in Danvilas Massachusetts was totally destroyed by a fire on Tuesday morning. Loss estimated at $40,000 with $20,000 insured. A second fire report from Baltimore notes the Mentzei paper mill near Illicott City burned Monday night, causing $40,000 in losses with $10,000 insured.
Five leaders of the national reform committee including American John Hiss Hammond were condemned to death at Pretoria after pleading guilty to high treason. Col. Francis Rhodes Lionel Phillips George Farrar Chas Leonard were also sentenced. The group argued their actions aimed to reform, not oppose the government, and claimed to have tried to stop Dr Jameson’s raid. London and Washington dispatches reported the sentences and potential commutations.
In Indianapolis on Tuesday Ambrose Moore a Republican State Central Committee member denies pursuing the United States marshal job. He says many friends urged him to run for reporter of the supreme court but he has not decided. He questions central committee involvement in a two days state convention and notes delegates should decide. He also clarifies rumors about Beveridge presiding and mentions Uncle Dick Thompson as possible chairman with Indiana’s capable contenders.
On a fishing trip in Corry Pennsylvania Howard Strassler and Frank McEleroy drowned when their boat capsized during a seat change. Cash Alexander survived after swimming to shore exhausted. In Jeffersonville Indiana Reverend Ernest Audran marked his golden jubilee as priest at St Augustine's church. Asbury Jacobs, wealthy citizen, died of paralysis in Jeffersonville on April 28.

Attorney Frank Blackledge recalls Rockville memories linking Albert Egbert to a shotgun killing. He describes Kate Wehert, Albert’s grandmother, as insane and often detained near the courthouse square. Julius Egbert, once county official, faced trouble, shaping a family history of alleged hereditary insanity.
William F. Churchman was named receiver of the Supreme Sitting of the Taylor Lodge Order of Equity in a suit by William Tl. Manee. The complaint alleges the beneficiary certificate for $500 due for illness or disability matured in 1886 and defaulted in 1896, with the lodge insolvent and unable to pay creditors. Churchman posted a $10,900 bond.
At Fort Monroe on April 23 the White Old Dominion line steamer Wyanoke, while leaving her dock at Newport News, fouled the cruiser Colinthia, causing the Colinthia to sink forefoot. All hands were saved. The Columbia sustained damage above the water line and will repair at Norfolk. Several crew members injured and treated by surgeons.
John Crouch, an ex-convict from Joplin City, Tennessee, entered Pine Flats depot Monday night wearing a mask and ordered agent J B Wolfe to hold up his hands. Wolfe fired when Crouch shot, the ball striking Crouch in the neck and killing him. Crouch hailed from a prominent local family.
Mrs Annie Dyer, the baby farmer, and her son-in-law Arthur Sc Palmer are under arrest at Reading charged with the murder of several infants. She has written a confession and is likely to plead insanity at trial.
SUFFOCATED. POTTSVILLE, Pa., April 28. Matt Fleming and Howard Burns were suffocated by gas at Albright & Co.'s Silvertown colliery near Minersville on Monday. Fleming's body was recovered, Burns remains missing. Both were young and unmarried. Burns had come from Shamokin recently.
Reports from Crete state that Turkish troops were repulsed at Selia by the Cretan reform committee, with 20 Turkish soldiers killed. The dispatch comes from Athens dated April 28.

A Petersburg dispatch reports Pocahontas coal mines miners will strike May 1 to restore a 60 cent wage rate and demand loading scales for 60,000 capacity hoppers. Norfolk & Western stores coal on sidings amid a booming trade. 809 to 1,000 workers could lose jobs. Also a note debunks rumors of Huntington seed company financial trouble stating the Washington Sun found no truth.
A committee was appointed to poll Parrott and Taggart shops to gauge how many employees would join the union, after reports the firm favored unionization. The union also planned to compel beer wagon drivers to join and extended time to resolve the dispute with Fertig and Keevers painters.
David Martin, delegate for the Fifth district in Philadelphia, announces he will vote for McKinley on the first ballot and on every subsequent ballot as long as McKinley remains a candidate.
