Chicago April 14 A oil tank exploded on the Northwestern tracks near California Street at 3 30 am causing a massive blaze. Two men fatally mangled bodies found as many bystanders vanished in the chaos. Firefighters could not reach the tanks quickly and several buildings burned while the oil sprayed across yards. Injured workers including Pat Fitreimmons and John Kleinfeldt were listed as probably fatal or will die, with others reported among the injured.
A chaotic quarantine formed around a police facility after a suspected smallpox case. Officers, reporters, and doctors faced restricted entry while patients were moved to a tent on the old house grounds. Vaccination was ordered for those visited, and the detective room saw officers playing poker amid the tension.

Gen H W Slocum, Civil War veteran and former U S congressman, dies at his Clinton Avenue home in Brooklyn after a period of pneumonitis. Born 1827 in Delaware County, New York, he rose from West Point graduate to colonel of the Twenty seventh New York and earned fame at Bull Run. He later served as major general and fought across the Virginia campaigns, the Shenandoah, and the Atlanta and Sheridan campaigns.
