A freight train on the Big Four stalled at Sankey Y and exploded, damaging all 13 cars. Whisky, tobacco, grain and lumber were scattered as a fire spread, with three barrels saved and several cars wrecked. Tramp Prochnow burned, taken to hospital. fire crews from Indianapolis cleared debris by noon.

A devastating Knoxville fire at 3:30 am destroyed Gay Street from Commerce to Union, wiping out the west side and many wholesale houses. The Hotel Knox burned with several inmates missing, and authorities feared hundreds of thousands to millions in losses. by noon the blaze was under control but the final death toll remained unclear, with up to twenty feared dead and many seriously injured.
