Jones amid A P A influence, while Democrats carried St Joseph and several towns.
Baltimore April report states Mr. James A. Gary will decline re-election after 16 years as Maryland’s national committeeman. Likely delegate-at-large to St. Louis convention, then fade to minor Maryland political role. Senator-elect Wellington is favored to be national committeeman by Maryland. Gary’s supporters deny enmity with Wellington despite policy clashes.
Albany reports Major Arnold, commander at Watervliet arsenal, and his wife were struck by a motor car in front of the arsenal while returning from a reception in Troy. Mrs Arnold severely injured and possibly dying. Arnold also injured. In Richmond, Va a tobacco executive, Mr John Pope, is gravely ill and not expected to survive the day.
Deputy marshal Taylor returned from Connersville to arrest Charles Weddell a 22 year old barber after he altered a one dollar bill by placing a fake ten note image on it and exchanged it with Woo Sing the local laundryman who paid him ten dollars Weddell confessed to the act stating he was out of his head Woo Sing pursued and Weddell was jailed for transport to Richmond for hearing next Friday before Commissioner Binkley The incident surprised his Howard and Clinton counties relatives and he had never been in trouble before
Washington April 17 Cadets finishing the four year West Point course in June confront an unusual shortage of officer vacancies across all army branches. Fewer retirements and casualties mean more cadets will compete for limited commissions, with some appointed from the ranks and others placed on awaiting lists as the law requires commissioning by the army.
Dr. Wyman of the Marine Hospital Service received word that the steamship Gaelic has arrived in San Francisco and was quarantined after landing a passenger with the Chinese plague in Yokohama. The Gaelic carries about 209 steerage passengers and is under inspection and disinfection.
The plasterers in Pittsburg to 500 members demand a higher wage rate. At a special meeting Tuesday night a uniform rate of 32 per day for nine hours was set to take effect Wednesday morning. This is the first scale since the 1891 building trades joint strike. The strikers will be backed by the building trades council and the union labor league.
An early Wednesday fire on the second floor of Savannah grocery company's five story building destroyed the structure and stock totaling about 11,000 in losses with 160,000 in insurance, half of which is in New York City. The adjoining building suffered severe damage.
The Journal reports that NY stockholders of Northern Pacific prefered stock plan to prevent the railroad’s proposed reorganization. A large block of stock is held across Pennsylvania and Philadelphia. Efforts are underway to unite these holders in a concerted suit.

In Washington on a Wednesday Senate debate over Mr Call's joint resolution for U S intervention in Cuba, Senator Turpie vehemently criticized the Cuban campaign conduct by Mr Sherman of Ohio and Senator Lodge of Massachusetts. He urged finance inquiry into bank reserve practices shifting funds to New York, questioning the need for reserves to stay in state banks and proposing reform. the bill was referred to the finance committee.
Coroner Castor investigated the death of John Raine’s young daughter at 18 McCauley street after two days with physicians Booz and Patlard in attendance. The death, deemed due to inanition, followed a Monday morning incident. The Raine family occupies the upper floor of a red barn-like house, with a white crape streamer visible from the front window. three families reside there.
Jacob Hoss and Andrew Clark were buried when ditch walls collapsed on Madison avenue Wednesday morning. Hoss suffered a broken left leg and serious bruising and was moved to City Hospital after initial care at his room on 222 West Maryland Street. Clark was taken home to ti Birchave West Indianapolis with internal injuries. outlook uncertain though recovery hoped.
Democrats carried Schenectady New York on Tuesday. In Minnesota town elections Democrats improved, Milwaukee stayed Republican by about 4,000 votes. Democrats also captured the council, signaling gains overall.
Edwin Clark a mate on the Singer Manufacturing steamer was killed crossing the Pennsylvania Railroad track at 9:05 AM after leaving St. Patrick's church where he wed Miss Water Galligan of 210 Clark Place Jolietport. His bride was saved by truckmen who pulled her from the path.
Fire largely wiped out the village of Rockford, Michigan, 13 miles north of Grand Rapids, after starting in a basement rubbish heap at a local maker's store early Wednesday. The blaze destroyed entire business stocks before help arrived and caused about six hundred dollars in insurance loss.
In a police court Wednesday a saloonkeeper at 48 Dillon Street was found not guilty of permitting gambling devices due to lacking a valid saloon license at the charged location. Evidence showed he ran an unlicensed saloon while another licensed one operated. Capt. Dawson closed the place after a mob gathered and threats were made toward Patrolman Schroeder.
The White House was fumigated in all rooms used by the Cleveland family after the illness of Hather Cleveland. A Woodley message said she is doing well and other children show no symptoms. Private Thurber's children are well, Dr O Reilly attends the patient, and Secretary Thurber will remain at the White House during the period.

In Pittsburg on April 8, veterinarians Jennings and Jackson killed 24 milde cows from the Harmony society at Economy due to tuberculosis. The move was ordered by Trustee John Duss and Meat-inspector Edwards as diseased parts were saved for analysis. All remaining healthy cows in Zwickley valley will be inoculated to curb the disease.

John Nurse faced police court Wednesday morning on charges of assault and battery with intent to kill James McCarty from a family ball at Mannerchor hall the previous Sunday. Nurse was bound over to the grand jury in 1500 bond after a clash that left McCarty struck with a brick and two gunshots fired.

Police enforce bicycle ordinance with vigor arresting Merritt Wells for riding without a bell and lacking a standard lantern. Wells produced a small bell ornament but was fined $1 plus costs. J P Hellner and David LaMotte also arrested for no lanterns. Hellner fined $1 and costs after attempting to flee. LaMotte fined $1 and costs for missing lantern and late return.
Five thousand union men in Cleveland’s building trades will demand an eight hour day on May 1. Previously only carpenters sought the change, but now plasterers stone masons bricklayers mortar mixers and hod carriers will join. Headquarters are set and notices sent to contractors asking recognition of the demand.
The Board of Works awarded contracts for local sewer work on Morris street and the first alley north of Morris from East street to Madison avenue to Sheehan Bros at 90 cents and on Sullivan street from Bismarck street to 50 feet south of McCarty street to Gansberg & Roney at 89 cents. It also approved paving with wooden blocks on Minnioa street from sixteenth street to Fall Creek North street from Fort Wayne avenue to Massachusetts avenue and Meridian to West street.
