A tidal wave and cyclone have devastated a large area of the New Hebrides on April 6. Many buildings were levelled and crops destroyed. Heavy loss of life is reported though a precise death toll is unavailable. Government buildings at Villa were demolished.
Philadelphia April 6 Charles E Ellis 73 longtime street railway president and financier shot himself at his home amid ill health and neuralgia. Neighbors heard the gunfire and rushed to aid but Ellis died at the scene. Ellis was reputed a millionaire and prominent businessman.
A Illinois National Guard regiment will guard a 2 1/2 mile Lake County Indiana auto race route on June 7 under military authority with Indiana governor consent. The Second Illinois regiment of Chicago is to march along the course as the Chicago Automobile Club oversees the event, closing the roads to the public. Governor Marshall initially hesitated but allowed the mission after conditions were met.
Cleve Jeffries, driver of the mall collecting automobile, was slated at police station Tuesday charged with violating the speed ordinance. The car collided with a nine touring car owned and driven by John L. Talge at Capitol avenue and Fifteenth street. Verling Hoff, collecting 8, was thrown through the partition. Bicycle Vice Wilson and Golnisch ordered to appear at police station Tuesday.

Marion lies 96 miles southeast of St Louis on the Illinois Central line.

A mine operator, John Soles, 33 years old, was struck and killed by lightning during a severe storm while driving along Greensburg Pike in Finsburg Pa. He leaves a widow and several young children. The incident marks the season’s first lightning fatality.
Marty Plummer real estate dealer was fined ten dollars plus costs in police court on charges of assault and battery and carrying concealed weapons. He had gone searching for Eu gene Harris armed with a revolver after a dispute over remarks about his mother-in-law. Harris intervened as Plummer attacked, and a struggle occurred at Castlehall on Ohio Street. Plummer admitted the facts and offered an apology.
William Fr. Tugenhorst a wealthy liveryman was found dead near the Pennsylvania end trucks in Etubenville. His throat was cut and a bullet wound in his head. He had been warned by threats from a rival in the horse trade and was going about armed.
The scheduled game between the champions and the Boston Americans for Tuesday was postponed due to rain. the teams will reschedule to play tomorrow.
Mrs Belle Thompson testified in police court that her brother Jesse Skinner kidnapped her two daughters after she left them at their grandmother’s home at 218 N Rural. Skinner denied the charges claiming the children were left with him and his mother and later placed with the Board of Children's Guardians. The Juvenile Judge advised transfer and Skinner was discharged.
President H A Davis of the Indianapolis Water Company who had been seriously ill at his son L Kt Dav is Pelham New York home was reported to be better Tuesday. A Pelham message gave Indianapolis friends the first hopeful word for his recovery after physicians conferred and said he probably would recover.
Samuel W Biddison, noted broker convicted of forgery, was sentenced by Judge Malone to not less than five years nor more than eight years in Sing Sing prison. His arrest stemmed from his accusation against J Montefire Mey, a Pittsburg con artist, in a case tied to a windfall scheme.
Lyons April 6 Mrs Frank P Allyn mother of Georgia Sampson accused of killing her husband Harry Sampson lies dying at her Macedon home as trial prosecutors, led by cousin District Attorney Joseph Gilbert, press for the death penalty. The case hinges on motive and the rifle found by the wall. The jury of 12 listens as Mrs Sampson sits with her father awaiting verdict.
In Pittsburg on April 6 an incline car reached the top of the plane when Engineer Jesse Britton, seeking air, failed to shut off steam. The car plunged down injuring seven passengers and killing two youths Frank Bradle 17 and Theodore Heber 16. Conductor and others were injured.
In courtroom No. 3 Judge Carter granted Grace Hagland Hoagland a divorce from William Hoagland. The couple’s 6-year-old daughter Louie Hoagland, who has lived with grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Michael Schubert, was awarded custody.
