City and street car company sign contract after officials meet in Board of Works office. Indianapolis gains four cent fares, street paving, and 1,160,000 dollars in cash. Council must ratify. Mr McGowan says the company is ready to implement the new order immediately.
City officials and street railroad officers began signing the contract at 11 56 a m Thursday and completed the task at exactly 12 01 p m.
The Indianapolis street railway contract was signed by Board of Works members and company officials after McGowan urged rapid approval. The deal runs 34 years with tickets and transfers, a $1.16 million city payment, a $25,000 bond, pavement work, and a $1 million service upgrade. Council ratification and mayoral signing expected soon with further amendments possible.
No official notice had been issued by 3 p m but it was understood the council will convene Thursday night to ratify the contract made by the Board of Public Works with the street car company.
After a two hour conference with city officials on Wednesday afternoon the talks over a street car franchise dissolved in a huff with Smith and his attorney at odds with the city.
Mayor Taggart declares the city will not back down and insists on a payment of 1 160 090 dollars, while promoter Mack McGowan refuses to sign the contract and warns that his associates may require time to decide. McGowan leaves without concession.
