Key West on April 6 faced extreme tension as preparations to evacuate Americans from Havana increased. Consul Lee planned rapid departures, with refugees and ships arriving from Havana and Govs seeking safe harbor at the British consul.
Havana reports Consul Brice at Matanzas requests guidance from Consul gen Lee to inform the state department that civil authorities cannot protect Americans during an anticipated outbreak. Anti American riots are expected hourly with some Americans already seeking safety aboard ships. Kansas City figures Richardson and Curtis helped import food for starving Cubans and Brice warns of likely mob violence before any action by authorities.
A Flong Kong dispatch says the United States Asiatic fleet is preparing to go to sea with coal and supplies loaded aboard the cruisers Olympia Boston Raleigh and the gunboats Petrel and Concord. The Nanshan has been purchased as a store ship and the destination is not revealed. Woodford and McArthur’s families reportedly left Madrid for Paris Tuesday night.
Governor Mount voices strong disfavor with the parole of Winnie Smith granted by the Jeffersonville reformatory board Tuesday evening. He urges the board to exercise careful discretion to prevent parole abuses and may seek revocation or board dissolution if parole is upheld. Smith, jailed 18 years for the 1854 Brighton Beach murder, had been a reformatory figure and writer at Jeffersonville.
Washington learns the delay in McKinley’s message to Congress may reflect key Madrid talks and possible Spanish peace overtures. Generals Lee warns of a Havana riot and American bloodshed, delaying the address as U S citizens in Cuba face danger and ships strain to evacuate them.
Washington April 6 Minister Woodford remains hopeful for peace after further talks with the Spanish minister. He reports to the state department he will send more developments after additional conferences on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Horatio Rubens chief counsel of the Cuban junta declares the United States plans intervention only with Cuban independence recognized. He warns Patriots may turn arms on U S troops if intervention proceeds without such recognition. Arch bishop Ireland urged peace and warned against intervention without independence. Forecast for Indianapolis and vicinity through 6 p m April 7 calls for warmer, fair conditions. Wednesday night and Thursday are expected to be fair with gradually rising temperatures. Noon Wednesday recorded 40 and 2 p m reached 41 degrees.

Friday evening an event at Colored Odd Fellows Hall on Indiana Avenue hosts a meeting to discuss the Cuban situation. Captains of the two colored militia companies have been invited to participate and share their views.
Mrs. Clarissa C. Ferguson widow of James C. Ferguson and longtime Indianapolis merchant has died at her daughter’s home in St Louis. Burial will take place at Crown Hill.
The Sun publishes the Wanted Female Help column aiding job seekers and employers. Notices promote Easter suit orders at 149 S. Illinois Ave and advertise acetylene gas as a safer lighting option for country houses and stores from C. H. Walcott at 142 N. Pennsylvania St.
