The Democratic governor and Republican Secretary of State and Auditor clash over appointive powers. A proposed arbitration would name two Republicans and the attorney general to select a third. If the decision favors Republicans, they gain control. if not, the governor would appoint.
In Indianapolis a second jury within a week finds Charles Jackson guilty of murder and recommends life imprisonment, following last week’s life term for Fred Cassell who killed his wife. Jurors opposed to the death penalty faced a split decision, ultimately saving the defendant’s life.
In Carbondale Illinois a Chicago and New Orleans express derailed after colliding with a freight on a switch track. One man killed, two severely injured, and many passengers jarred. Fireman John Hamilton of Centralia died. engineer Newton Barrett and baggage man are among the wounded with serious head and body injuries.
The county commissioners on Friday held up Sheriff Woessner's claim for payment for escorting prisoners to testify before the coroner. Commissioner Mendenhall said he never knew a sheriff to charge for such service and the claim would not be paid.

Hyman reclaimed the horse after Castro defaulted, and the jury also approved payment of jury costs, while allowing Hyman to keep the horse.
Police hunt a well dressed stranger after Ludwig E. Krueger aged 63 and his wife 66 were found stabbed to death in their charred Monroe street home near Central avenue. Fire and arson clues emerged as investigators believe burglary motive. brick floor tampering uncovered the women’s face while the killer vanished.
James M Berryhill, guardian of George Rhodius, filed for a compromise with Emminger and Amiet who lease Circle Park hotel and hold deed to 43 W Washington property. A former suit upheld the title. a second trial is set for April 6 before Superior Judge Weir. Deed transfers and long service to Rhodius's mother figure in the dispute. appraisal values property at about 5000 dollars.
In criminal court Friday morning Thompson and Lee Gist were found guilty of petit theft. Thompson received a $1 fine and three months in the workhouse, while Gist was also fined $1 and given a similar sentence. William Brunsen was acquitted. Ed mand pleaded guilty to grand theft and was fined $1 and sent to Reformatory for one to fourteen months.
