The Geneva assembly discusses disarmament and the Washington conference, with India’s Sastri urging practical support for the league. Elihu Root declines candidacy for the international court due to age, while Frenchman Bourgeois defends the league’s stance and U S interest in its work.
Vernon W VanFleet of South Bend Ind has been chosen to succeed John G Pollard of Richmond Va on the Federal trade commission whose term expires Sept 25 Officials said Harding announcement of the selection was expected soon VanFleet serves as a special assistant in the office of Attorney General Daugherty and was Harding s Indiana campaign manager He is a former judge of the St Joseph Circuit Court and Republican chairman of the Thirteenth congressional district.
Senator Oscar Underwood says the four American delegates to the Washington conference on armaments will act as a unit and back a concrete disarmament agreement. He stresses no party politics in international talks and urges convincing other nations of the need for limits.
Japan and France have formally assented to inviting Belgium and Holland to participate in the arms limitation conference due to their interests in the Orient. State Department expected to receive other responses soon, while no invitations will be sent to Bulgaria and the Netherlands until all powers agree. Continued on page eleven.
The State Department received one of two copies of the United States Germany peace treaty signed at Berlin on August 25. Hugh R. Wilson, secretary of the American commission to Germany, brought the document to America. The treaty is printed in English and German in parallel texts. A copy with Austria was also received.
The Indiana special election on thirteen constitutional amendments concluded with Amendment No 1, disqualifying foreign Sorn not fully naturalized from voting, endorsed by a majority of participating electors. Official tally shows 120,942 votes for and 80.5? against. amendment becomes part of the state constitution once county returns are certified. Attorney General Lesh notes it takes effect when certified returns arrive. Governor McCray to issue proclamation.
Official statewide totals show ninety one counties reported voter participation at 218 816 with Noble County pending a final count. Citizenship amendment approved by 20 519 margin, while general tax amendment defeated by 134 400. Ratification of amendment No 1 and defeat of proposal No 2 do not invalidate registration laws per Attorney General Lesh. Continues on page three.
Chicago on September 1 the police reported Harvey W. Church named Parks as an accomplice in the murders of Bernard Daugherty and Carla Ausmus. Parks allegedly aided in abducting Daugherty, beating him, and aiding in disposing of the body, with further claims about Ausmus. A third man’s involvement remains undisclosed, and officials would not confirm his arrest.
United States Weather Bureau reports a cloudy Tuesday with showers later, followed by a forecast of little temperature change for Indiana and vicinity. Tuesday night and Wednesday expect showers and modest temp shifts as conditions evolve across the region.
San Antonio dispatch reports more than 100 bodies recovered in flooded lowlands along the San Gabriel river across Williamson and Milam counties, with 49 already found in San Antonio. About 20 families lost, and property damage is expected to exceed 1,000,000. Death lists detail numerous Mexican victims and scattered locations.
Special to The Indianapolis Star reports a Marion Indiana burglary where a thief used a rake to reach into a bedroom and steal money from trousers, then entered the kitchen and devoured most of a chocolate cake. The incident occurred as Austin Shoemaker slept, with 36 dollars taken from the pants.
Dublin dispatch reports the Dail Eireann preparing a reply to Lloyd George on Irish settlement. Griffith MacNeill Barton named as likely plenipotentiaries with Austin Stack possibly included. The Dail will freely approve or select its own delegation choice.
Hugh ON speaker of Ulster Parliament warned at Ballymena County Antrim that curtailing the new body’s rights amid British cabinet Sinn Fein talks could trigger civil war in Ireland. He said conflict would pit north against south and bring global horrors, involving Britain and the United States.
Madrid reports an excursion boat with about fifty aboard capsized on the Segre river near Lerida. More than twenty persons are missing, with rescue operations underway and authorities investigating the disaster.
Washington Sept 12 Japan wins first diplomatic victory in the coming international conference. The United States will join Great Britain France Italy and Japan in a five nation body guiding the conference while China is placed in a consulting role. China to be invited only when its interests arise. The rule makers will be the five nations. Continued on page eleven.
Charles P. Tighe an Indianapolis attorney who recently resigned as agent in charge of the local FBI bureau was appointed chairman of the Democratic speakers bureau by Thomas Merker city chairman. He will coordinate men and women speakers and set meetings for the open speaking campaign. Republican plans to open precinct meetings may delay, with Lew Shank to speak at precinct executive committee meetings.
Coroner inquiry details unfold as party guests testify about Miss Virginia Rappe death after a party at the St Francis hotel. Arbuckle's legal team seeks Friday continuance while grand jury probes evidence from witnesses including Mrs Delmont and Joyce Clark.
