Indiana state fair closes its thirty-eighth annual run with dirt track auto races as a major feature. Officials expect record attendance and prize payouts amid broad praise for exhibits, judging, and new buildings enhancing the fair's future.
In Woodlake Kentucky a coalition of Elkorn Baptist Association churches plans a unified campaign starting October 2 to oppose motion pictures dancing immodest undress mixed bathing divorce Sunday baseball card playing horse racing gambling and violations of prohibition laws. The annual meeting urged a broad effort with the General Association of Kentucky Baptists also urged to join the movement against race track gambling in the state.
Washington September 3. Women are to participate in the conference on employment arranged by President Harding and Secretary Hoover. Mrs Harriet Taylor Upton of Obie was asked to suggest names of several women for delegates and agreed to submit a list of tens. The wage award and Bethlehem Steel claims are noted in the labor context.
Chicago Council condemns the Landis award as unjustifiable and votes to request a rehearing. Workers across unions walk off large city jobs while electricians and bricklayers have approved the new wage scale. Plasterers draft a separate presentation to contractors and Judge Landis, returning from vacation, will hear the proposal. Carpenters outside the decision are told the $1-an-hour wage in effect now may apply, while unions weigh final stance.
An appeal to Bird S Colter welfare commissioner seeks help for about 10,000 seamen out of work in Brooklyn. Carla Brandt of the Bethe ship seamen branch of the Brooklyn Y M C A says many destitute men sleep in parks. Coler called a conference with Senator Calder. Louis W Sullivan named director of the city industrial aids bureau to deal with unemployment.
Four robbers of Beech Grove State Institution vanished with nearly $23,000 after a bank holdup at the Beech Grove State bank. A touring car stolen from the Indiana Statehouse was found abandoned near Hast Tenth street and Emerson avenue. Police scoured miles around but no trace of the men. The car carried Ohio plates. bandits wore overall jackets and masked faces. The heist involved three men and a fourth at the wheel, with revolvers drawn to threaten tellers and customers. Bank officials resumed business within an hour. The story continues on page eight.
Forecast calls for local thunder showers Saturday with Sunday showers followed by clearing and much cooler conditions. Strong south winds expected as the area experiences a change in weather from a warm spell to cooler air. The Almanac notes yesterday's weather and provides sun rise timing and temperature records for Indianapolis and vicinity.
Dublin reports a Dail cabinet meeting presided by Eamon De Valera decided to convene a private session next Wednesday to consider Lloyd George's invitation for a conference on the Irish question at Inverness on Sept. 20. Optimists say plenipotentiaries may be appointed. Griffith remains center stage, with Barton ready to return if needed.
In Belfast Meadow street remained active with gunfire despite a morning truce. Warring factions in North Queen Street and York Street areas, previously scenes of fighting, continued to clash as military authorities invited representatives to discuss peace. The situation was reported by Associated Press.
Five persons are missing after the San Antonio river and a swollen creek flooded downtown San Antonio Texas early this morning. Property damage runs into thousands as water inundated St Mary's Street Houston Navarro and surrounding blocks. Names include Mrs Alma Elam and two children and Charles Grant and wife. Buildings such as the Gunter hotel and Gunter office building logged water to ground floor. Fire officials reported rapid rises then slight falls in some areas amid cautious watches.
Berherda Dougherty, a Chicago area automobile salesman, is found dead in the Desplaines River with signs of a brutal struggle. Carl Ausmus is missing while H W Church and his son are detained in Adams Wisconsin as authorities link the case to a bank delivery and a forged note.
Brussels reports Belgium will end its occupation detachment in occupied Germany with Allied consent. The unit will return to Belgium on or about September 15, ending its role in the Ruhr basin.
In Geneva a Colombian official said Colombia would be among the first to apply for membership if President Harding pursues a new league framework. A. F. Restrepo noted Colombia’s stance after the covenant amendment was rejected, and he predicted other South American states would follow the American lead.
Registration opens for 165 precincts in Indianapolis with sites listed on page 16. Leaders predict at least half of November voters will be registered today as both parties push signups. The process allows notarized or two-resident signed applications sent to precinct offices for recording. Official statewide counts from the September 1 special election are underway at the Indiana Capitol, with results expected tomorrow.
Lafayette, Ind. September 0. Eastern bondholders of the Lafayette Street Haigves Company warn in a telegram to a real newspaper that service on Joed Tinea will be suspended soon. The Lafayette Serve nce Company, operating the street railway, has faced financial difficulties and without prompt action the city will lose street car service in a few weeks.
Washington Sept 9 The controller of the currency today issued a call for the condition of all national banks at the close of business on Tuesday Sept 6.
