Thousands attended Indiana's state fair on Governor's Day as Hoosier harness horses compete for a $5,000 purse. Gov McCray rode with Purdues band and a parade of prize cattle and horses preceded a hippodrome show. Attendance neared last year's figures with 48,413 paid admissions, just short of 52,833.
Charles Baskerville of the College of the City of New York told the international chemistry conference that the Bible is not up to date and must be revised essentially in the name of science. Dr Arthur Little of Boston predicted solar energy as the next great science achievement and urged chemistry to harness the sun to replace dwindling coal and petroleum supplies. He argued brains can surpass muscle for energy and cited solar energy’s vast potential for powering civilization.

Building owned by Martin Hugg of 234 North Delaware Street.
Washington reports say Efihu Root may participate formally in the armament limitation conference after talks with President Harding and Secretary Hughes. Root, ex secretary of state and head of the Carnegie Endowment, visited the White House and discussed how the endowment could aid the conference. No appointment or delegation offer has been confirmed, though officials expect possible informal advisory support from Root.
Benton county assessor Louis Evang was killed instantly when the sedan he rode in with his grandson Chester Louis Evang was struck by an eastbound Lake Erie and Western train at Oxford Indiana. The car was thrown 25 feet. Chester was injured perhaps fatally. Evang, a prominent Benton county farmer, had just been elected county assessor. He is survived by his widow, a son, two brothers Wallace Evans of California and Joseph Evans of Newcastle, and a sister in Oklahoma.
At Aitken Arkansas Mansfield Butler and Charlie Thompson, both black men, were lynched in a corfield near town after being charged with assault on a white woman. The mob action occurred tonight as authorities offered no protection.
In Hibbing Minnesota a man named John Webb killed three local police chiefs and wounded another officer after an attempted arrest on a statutory charge. Webb fled toward Wiljum as a posse pursued. Webb's son filed a warrant against him for offenses against his daughter. Chief Hays died at the Webb home, Detective Cassidy died of a shoulder wound, and Officer Robb died later in hospital. Webb, a widower with six children, was known as a track shooter.
The League notes argue the United States cannot single handedly bind its government on mandates.
