Ex mayor fatally wounded by accidental gun discharge near Indianapolis club
Joseph E. Bell, attorney and former Indianapolis mayor, was fatally wounded when a gun he was cleaning discharged while on the porch of the Indianapolis Gun Club near Ben Davis. He died about twenty minutes later. His wife Martha Bell and onlookers described the moment as the weapon discharged from the barrel resting against his stomach. Witnesses, including Charles Pittask and Clem Starr, testified that Bell had been on a shooting range earlier and appeared surprised as the gun fired. Mrs. Bell, prostrate with shock, was taken home as coroners investigated the incident.
