War vet is named head of orphanage in Knightstown
Lassle A Cortner a Winchester Indiana school teacher and World War I veteran was appointed superintendent of the Soldiers and Sailors Orphans home at Knightstown Indiana by the board of trustees after a statehouse meeting. Cortner is the first veteran of a war other than Civil to hold the post, succeeding Luther Short a Civil War veteran who led the home for six years. Cortner enlisted as a private in World War I, rose to sergeant, then trained as an officer and served with the 34th Division. He is 28, married, and part of a board that includes Daniel Mumford and other Indiana officials. The home oversees dozens of children of veterans from World War I, Spanish-American War, and the Civil War.
