The Indiana State Federation of Labor executive committee met in South Bend and did not adopt a recommendation to the state convention on endorsing any candidate. Despite hints for Dr. McCulloch or Carleton, the committee voted to refrain from a formal recommendation. The group plans to meet Aug. 28 to discuss politics and a forum with Democratic and other party representatives. A special invitation will go to William E Johnston for the campaign event.
Reports from Santos on July 22 detail government forces recapturing several rebel outlying stations and pressing artillery into strategic positions. A twelve hour artillery duel near the city ended with Federals surrounding the rebels on three sides, while American consul Hueberle reports no American casualties. Some rebels and Federals wear identical uniforms, blurring lines between sides as the military movement unfolds amid civilian unease.

James M. Ogden will be appointed corporation counsel to replace Taylor E. Groninger, who will resign Aug 1 to serve as special attorney for Indiana Bell. Mayor Shank cited virgon H. Manifold as a potential successor, with a decision expected after the mayor returns from Kalamazoo. Groninger, city attorney since 1922, represented the city on major rate cases. Ogden has served since the Shank administration began and aided Groninger on corporate matters.
West Baden Ind July 22 Disputed appropriation of 130000 for the Independent Woman publication at the sixth annual convention of the National Federation of Business and Professional Club Women. Mary Moore of East St Louis challenged the plan as Minnesota and Minnesota members push for a low cost option. The debate, led by Miss Lana Medesin Phil Up of New York, centers on whether the magazine should be included with the national membership.
A 23 year old man James Ford of Holly Falla was prostrated while walking near Pennsylvania and Vermont streets as heat peaked at the afternoon high. He was taken to City Hospital in serious condition. A cooling north breeze halted the temperature rise and by evening the mercury fell below 60. Weather forecasts expected rising temperatures today with possible showers and cooler weather tomorrow.
In Columbus Indiana a 10 day old infant, Ralph Edgar Hofman Jr., son of hotel owner Ralph Edgar Hofman, had his hair bobbed. The unusual feat, claimed as the youngest among a group boasting early haircuts, occurred at a local barber shop with the child under his mother’s custody.

Washington July 22 Attorney General Stone ordered preparations to fight any move to modify the Wilson era consent decree that barred the big five Chicago packers from other lines of business. He said the public interest requires resisting reopening and warned against speculation that he would concede to changes or consider engaging with packers’ counsels. The statement also noted Stone’s readiness to use legal action to prevent monopoly and protect consumers, while denying reports he would refrain from opposing packer moves or that he had been contacted by the Farmers National Council.
In Mound City Illinois on July 22 crowds near the jail threatened trouble after three suspects, two Negroes and a girl, were taken to Pulaski county jail. Sheriff J J Hudson led the prisoners from his home to a car and hurried them to Murphysboro as deputies armed with riot guns stood at the courthouse. The slain girl’s father asserted he identified the suspects, fueling further hostility until authorities redirected the prisoners to Menard Illinois. Governor Smail ordered Company A1 180th infantry to mobilize and move to Mound City under Captain William Greaney.
State Chairman Clyde A. Walb of Lafayette at Republican State headquarters in Indianapolis plans to push radio use for Indiana’s campaign. He will discuss with National Chairman William A. New York July 2 Mrs Trang Belly sues ex Sheriff John F ely for separation alleging she confined her husband in her official role to protect him from disgrace. Affidavits claim the act impris oned him at home and hindered his return to public life amid a contested domestic dispute.
