Newport News Virginia January 30 Corporal John S Wood and James Haney of Langley Field identified by Capt Norman D Cola chief finance officer at the field all the bandits who held up him and four companions at the First National Bank of Hampton this morning and escaped with the army payroll of 43000 were captured by a posse about twenty miles from here tonight In the woods near Big Bethel the money was recovered A vigorous search had been prosecuted by military police and Department of Justice officials and their capture was believed to be only a matter of hours The captain and the four who accompanied him were found bound gagged and fled to trees near Big Bethel near their damaged auto The captors said the bandits escaped into the woods with the money The holdup occurred at 015 this morning as the finance officer left the bank and entered his auto to return to Langley Field Witnesses described the bandits as armed with revolvers The auto was driven at high speed toward Newport News The affair was carried out methodically by Roy Crockett of Hampton one of the witnesses and the story continues on Page Three
