Secretary Stanton Refuses Sickles Relief From Carolinas Command

Secretary Stanton declines General Sickles request to be relieved from command in the Carolinas. Sickles had sent the appeal to the Secretary of War and Stanton responds no change at this time. General Grant has replied to Sheridan but withholds publication until President Johnson returns. He reportedly ordered Sheridan to act as usual until then, with definitive orders to follow on the President’s return.

General Grant Replies to Sheridan Refusal to Publish

New York's Tribune reports Grant answered Sheridan's list letter but will not publish until President Johnson returns. Stanton declines Sickles's request to be relieved from the Carolinas command. A cabinet review of the Attorney General's second opinion on military command powers was completed. Stanton alone dissented on the vote. Public disclosure of the proceedings was rejected.

Suits to Recover Damague in San Francisco

In San Francisco on Tuesday the state filed suits against the Pacific Mail Company to recover 20000 for violation of passenger commutation tax requirements. Also named are owners and consignees of ships Garland Litenssuthard and Gem is the Ocean for similar penalties. The law imposes a five dollar per head tax on passengers from foreign ports, with a 1.50 penalty per passenger for noncompliance.

Fire destroys block in Council Bluffs and office loss

The North American ran ashore at the south point of Anticosti Island at 11 p m on Sunday night the 16th. All lives saved and crew and passengers in good health. Cargo being jettisoned, mails and baggage landed. ship light. Rescue expected to offload if weather remains moderate.
