The Supreme Court yesterday debated dismissing the Mc Cardle case for lack of jurisdiction after previously setting March hearings. Separately Commodore Vanderbilt's illness was noted, and bishops and officials across the country prepared to address ecclesiastical and legislative matters.
A Pennsylvania Railroad eastbound passenger train derailed near Millcreek after a broken rail. Four rear cars left the track. three plunged down an embankment and caught fire. A Pittsburgh woman Anna Duggan is believed killed. several others including Mrs. Georgia Adams, Philip J. Manson, Mrs. Mary Grouse, W Nickle, Herbert Noonson, W W Powell, L Chase, Mrs. General Rodman and daughter, J Busser sustained injuries. The Connellsville bill was approved by General Geary.
A morning blaze caused principal losses with multiple insured totals. Names include A F Anderson at 78 Delaware street with 10000 building loss. Scott & Woodruff dry goods. John W. Blaine with a 12000 building loss. B Fresher dry goods stock loss. several insured amounts across Home Insurance and North American companies in New York Hartford Philadelphia Putnam and New Haven firms.
Dispatches from Florence claim Italy plans a naval expedition to Rio de la Plata with no official explanation. Reports say the fleet in Naples has orders to sail for Paraguay, while authorities withhold details. Other items note Reichstag reassembly, travel writer debunking hostile moves against Russia, and varied London financial and commodity updates.
Ricu Mono Friday January 31 convention adopts articles from the finance committee. A settlement with West Virginia regarding state debts and credits to Virginia public debt is approved. The franchise report moves to next week. A majority report disfavors those disfranchised by reconstruction acts. substitute and minority report noted.
The convention adopted the article on the government and executive State officers with a slight amendment. It heard majority and minority reports on suffrage and appointed a five member committee to report names for relief from political disabilities. The militia committee's report was debated. it requires all able bodied male citizens aged twenty one to forty to perform military duty, with religious scruples exempted.
Jackson convention report says the committee on printing was committed. Mr Clarke offered a resolution restricting reporters from admission who distinguish between members by title or race. The motion to table the resolution passed by a three vote majority.
