Western idea created the G A R born near St Louis
The G A R arose from a western impulse with Dr. B F Stephenson and Chaplain W T Rutledge forming plans in 1864 and organizing the first post in 1866. The order’s constitution barred partisan talk, aiming to unite Union veterans, support widows and orphans, and foster devotion to the Union. It lists many past Commanders in Chief and notes a 1891 membership of 419,369.
