Paris Antiquities Trial Exposes Bogus Antiques Trade
Jean Vigouroux testified at the Twelfth Correctional Court in Paris that the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York have repeatedly bought counterfeit works for years. He alleged $7,000 diverted from a Parisian branch and the loss of Persian manuscripts valued at 1,000,000 francs, later recovered by M. DeMotte. The trial featured sharp accusations and disruptions as Vigouroux denounced DeMotte as the world’s greatest antique taker.
