War on Wood Waste Through Cooperation with Lab

A federal brochure from the Department of Agriculture describes Forest Products Laboratory work at Madison Wisconsin in cooperation with the University of Wisconsin to cut wood waste. It notes only about 80 percent of forest wood becomes usable lumber and up to 25 percent more is lost in manufacture. Preservative treatment could prevent annual losses of 1.5 billion board feet especially for railroad ties, easing forest drain and extending timber life. The lab offers technical data to wood users and manufacturers to supplement experience.
