A mixed page piece notes the vast African poaching impact between 1854 and 1875, claiming millions of animals destroyed in the Transvaal and Orange Free State and a resulting leather boom in Europe, with zebra and quagga hides praised for sturdy uppers. It then moves through brief items about a fire risk in an office, a misinformed obituary tone, a roof herd in Lima, a quirky speed claim, a will filing in Center township, a wallpaper job at a Presbyterian church, and finally a Pittsburgh surgical triumph where Drs Sadler and Sigmann restore sight and hearing in Mr Massey after a traumatic eye injury.

In 1868 Havana faced a scarcity of volunteers for the ten year revolution. Posters in Matanzas promised Spaniards passage home and plunderable pockets for enlistment, igniting a rush that produced about 50,000 volunteers within 48 hours. Havana merchants opposed the rising power as Governor General Dulce arrived to reform Cuba, though his lenient approach threatened the rebellion’s future.
