A traveler, Norman, keeps a carved bronze satyr known as The Liberator in a riverside bungalow. His wife, in mourning, warns of the statue’s past as Norman recounts a Segovian mine and Granada visit, where danger, romance, and a dangerous secret emerged from a long-ago theft.
A narrator recalls a perilous pursuit in Granada where Isabel is abducted by Don Manuel and Pepe. In a duel with a machete, Don Manuel dies during an earthquake as the Liberator statue crashes, freeing the narrator and his bride. The earthquake is blamed for the death, and the couple flee with their treasure.
