Fragments describe Indiana process and a humorous poem by J. Gil. Landen about seven workers at Guthrie’s mill, named Moorhead Rip tare Gibson Gook White Bardon Clements and others, with reflections on freedom and labor in a rustic setting.
Dispatches report a riot along the Memphis and Louisville line in Gibson county near Trenton where a mob seized sixteen colored prisoners from a jail, tied them, and shot four dead while wounding two others. Abductions and threats provoke arming among blacks and whites. court sessions feature denouncements of disguised assailants.
Fort Sill dispatch reports Big Red Poet and about fifty warriors at the Wichita agency. General Davidson led about 250 troops to arrest them. disarming sparked a fight with Kiowa and Comanche allies. Three soldiers were shot, several Indians killed, lodges and tents burned, and more troops sent as tensions rise. Four citizens were killed near the agency.
In the Oil Regions, complaints rise over money strangulation and a bleak business mood as seventy five cent crude depresses the market. Despite heavy shipments from Butler, demand remains unmet, and producers face ruinous excess supply. The Oil City Derrick urges producers to fix commercial policy to restore prosperity.
A court charge seeks grand jury witnesses along the road to Picketsville to arrest criminals. A hurried report claims a large armed group of negroes heads toward Bren ton. Senators were sent out and returned with news of calm. Union City militia units have arrived. other dispatches mention broader armament.
Steuben correspondent recalls James Gordon Bennett founder of the New York Herald. He collected 18.70 for teaching in 1816 while passing through Steuben Maine then taught in the village school before leaving for Boston. The town later received copies of the Herald due to Bennett s friendship.
Communications from Girard dated August 22 1874 recounts severe accidents including Joseph Shain crushed by a roof collapse and John Lennon badly injured with possible amputation. Also notes railroad fatalities, fever decline after a local election, temperance efforts, a county teachers institute, and community meetings with religious and educational discussions including Sabbath School growth.
