Can Fish Hear? Harvard Experiments Show Some Can

Harvard professor G H Parker and colleagues conducted underwater sound tests with New England minnows at Wood Hall. Three groups of fish were studied: normal ears, severed ear nerves, and skin-insensitive fish. About 96 percent of normal fish reacted to underwater noise, suggesting some fish can hear, while others showed no response. The findings indicate hearing may exist in some fish species though sensitivity varies.
