Farragut's Flight From Virginia's Secession to New York
On learning Virginia's secession Farragut left Norfolk with his family within hours. He rode a canal boat to Philadelphia then to New York, enduring travel disruptions and scarce funds. He found shelter with a friend, rented a cottage at Hastings on the Hudson, and waited to serve his country while the department in Washington moved slowly.
