Substitutes for Anthracite Fire One: Industry Reports This Winter

The Bureau of Mines says acceptable substitutes for anthracite exist to avert a potential famine. Bituminous coal remains common, with coke, fuel oil, briquets, and briquette sizes of anthracite as viable options. Coke offers clean handling and steady heat but requires damper control and patience. Bituminous coal can burn nearly smokelessly with proper technique, though it needs more air management and regular damper adjustments. Briquetted fuel grows in availability, offering easier handling with varying quality outcomes.
