Free diphtheria antitoxin arrangements for rapid state-wide relief

The Division of Supplies and Biological Products of the Pennsylvania State Department of Health distributes free diphtheria antitoxin through 700 stations with 24 hour service and rapid forwarding by rail or auto. An example details a shifter engine delivering antitoxin eighteen miles through a snowstorm to save a girl’s life. The system includes 13 general distributors to speed shipments, and officials claim timely treatment can cut diphtheria mortality from about 40 percent to 5 or 6 percent, urging prompt physician involvement.
