Unfortunate coin ends the Columbian silver souvenir scheme
The Order of Secretary Carlisle shut down the failed souvenir coin venture after about 3,600,000 silver half dollars remained with the treasury. Carlisle issued a par exchange to deter circulation while seeking to boost redeeming demand, but the plan collapsed amid founder promoters and treasury resistance. A 1893 syndicate had proposed selling 100,000 coins with enamel designs inspired by Queen Victoria’s jubilee, yet secret service objections halted the controversy at the outset.
